Pregnancy Skin Care
Pregnancy or approaching motherhood is one of the most joyful periods in a woman’s life and a milestone event in the life of every woman, an event that she has looked forward to with deep yearning all through her life or these are what societal norms have taught us to believe down the ages.
But at the same time pregnancy is a difficult period for most women because during this time, especially at an advanced stage, when the belly starts protruding out and the circumference of the waistline far surpasses that of the breasts, a woman feels really mortified and alarmed while looking into the mirror and encountering her bloated out of shape figure.
Due to hormonal imbalance women also undergo increased hairloss and the texture of the skin often becomes rough or alters. A woman who had dry skin or normal skin throughout her life previous to pregnancy, finds that her skin has turned oily and pimple prone in the post partum phase and vice versa.
The post partum phase is also marked by the appearance of deep stretch marks which start developing during the pre natal phase and this is what worries most wannabe moms the most because these stretch marks can be pretty ugly and difficult to drive out. Often they stay on for the rest of the life and that is why pregnancy skin care is so important.
Other skin problems that women report during this time are melasma, varicose veins and acne.
To treat and reduce the appearance of stretch marks, you should start applying coco butter or shea butter or a mixture of heavy oils like castor oil, almond oil and coconut oil in equal quantities and rub the concoction on your belly daily without fail, right from the beginning of your pregnancy. Or you may substitute coconut oil with olive oil.
The earlier you start, lesser are the chances of the stretch marks becoming deep seated. Heavy duty moisturizing can combat the negative effect of the skin stretching itself.
You should consume gallons of water and two table spoonfuls of flax seed oil every single day. You can also rub baby oil that is rich in 100% vitamin E on your stretch marks to keep the skin lubricated.
Calcium fluoride or other kinds of tissue salts that are synthesized from minerals may be used on the advice of your gynecologist.
Stay far away from all kinds of chemical based cosmetics or even “herbal” ones. If preparing natural recipes at home is a really big bother, then you can consider using really reputed and genuine 100% natural organic products, but check out the contents/ingredients label first.
Acne can be treated through homeopathic medicines like pulsatilla, through mineral zinc, through vitex, burdock root and yarrow. You can apply sandalwood and turmeric paste or a paste of Neem, mint, multani mitti/fuller’s earth, clove and a pinch of camphor mixed with unsweetened curd or rose water on the affected portions. The pimples and acne will vanish in a week along with the marks.
If you prefer aromatherapy you can mix drops of tea tree oil, oil of lavender, oil of patchouli and that of lemongrass along with carrier oils to cure acne, pimples and acne sores.

My family got stretch marks with each pregnancy....I was determined NOT too. I looked online for products and found spoiled mama TUMMY BUTTER. It claimed to be organic, safe during pregnancy, even while breastfeeding....everything I wanted to hear. It is kinda pricey so I really took a gamble on it and prayed it would work to prevent my dreaded family curse of stretch marks.
When it arrived I ran to my bedroom, undressed and slapped the cocoa butter concoction all over my body. It smelled amazing, I wanted to eat it...but more importantly- will it work? YES,YES,YES!!!
After 6 months and 60lbs (I know crazy) I only got one tiny stretch mark on my hip! My tummy is left with ZERO stretch marks! I swear by SPOILED MAMAS TUMMY BUTTER!! I was skeptical at first but now I tell everyone! It really is amazing and totally worth it!!
BTW- I asked my OB if creams would help with preventing SM and she didn't want to comment. She did recommend to use lotions/oils that are free from parabens, petroleum and mineral oil, since they don't allow ingredients to "penetrate" your skin. I found PALMERS, BABY OIL, VASELINE LOTION all contain these ingredients. SO READ YOUR INGREDIENT LABELS- don't be fooled by the word: organics!!!
