How to build a Rabbit Hutch for your furry friend?

If you want to build a rabbit hutch, you will find that it is not really as difficult a task as you had deemed. A hutch is usually the resting place of domesticated game animals like rabbits. You can build a hutch out of usual materials like wire and plywood.

Planks of wood are used to prop the hutch up and above the ground so that it doesn’t come into contact with the surface of the ground. As said earlier, if you choose to build a conventional rabbit hutch you will find it relatively easy. A rabbit hutch will offer your pet rabbit nest boxes – the living space for new born bunnies, good ventilation and a reliable and sturdy shelter.

  • Rubber gloves

Instructions on How To Build A Rabbit Hutch

# 1

First you have to decide upon the design and for this you will require an illustrated guide. You can either do the rounds of several pet stores or have a look at the designs of hutch they keep or you can collect product information leaflets where there will be pictures or you can hunt up plans and layouts with step by step illustrated instructions from the vast archives of the internet. The last one is the best choice for it involves the least hassle.

# 2

Instead of trying to build the cage yourself, opt for a readymade wire cage either from farming supply centres or from pet stores. This readymade cage will serve the function of being the foundation of your pet’s hutch. Check out for loose wire ends that may be jutting out and cut them off with wire cutter. Purchase a cage that will be spacious and roomy and commensurate with the size of your rabbit.

# 3

Use the 2X4 planks to build a support frame and make the cage sturdy and convenient for outdoor use.

# 4

Build 3 feet high wooden legs for the hutch.

# 5

To set the cage in the desired place, you have to hammer the legs into the place earmarked for the hutch.

# 6

Attach a plywood hinged roof on top of the hutch.

# 7

You can throw in some accessories like transparent plastic cover or shingles and retractable pan.

Rabbit Hutch - Warnings and Tips

  • If you are using metal wire, you need to protect your hands by wearing rubber gloves which can prevent or act as a buffer against cuts, nicks and other injuries because of the loose ends of the wire.
  • Compared to a wooden rabbit hutch that is enclosed, a wire cage is a better choice.
  • Rabbits, when they are put inside an enclosed hutch take to urinating in the corners. The wood will start absorbing ammonia as a result, which can be detrimental to the health of your rabbit.
