Giant Alaskan Malamute: The Cutest, Cuddliest Dog Breed in The World

While traveling all over England, I have observed one common thing in all the different counties and that is peoples’ love for dogs. It wouldn’t be an exaggeration to comment that English people are crazy about keeping dogs as pets and I have come across numerous English families where 4 kids of different ages are coupled with 4 or 5 or even 6 different breeds of dogs.

I personally feel the sight is pretty amusing, especially when the mummies and daddies are at a loss trying to control both the kids and the dogs and not knowing whom to scold! But generally the pet dogs in England are far better behaved than the kids, which is a relief!

Whenever I get out on the roads, I come across canine species of all shapes and sizes and in different colors. Some of the commonest dog breeds that are seen in England happen to be greyhounds, dachshund, poodle, Labradors, rottweiler, Doberman, German shepherds, Jack Russell, terrier and so on. I am not well acquainted with the rest of the breeds that I see everyday.

One particular breed that has recently caught my fancy is the soft and furry, incredibly cuddly and cute Alaskan malamute. In the holy city of Canterbury I had the good fortune of snuggling up to two Giant Alaskan Malamute dogs and petting them to my heart’s content. And that chance encounter has ignited my interest and curiosity regarding this particular breed. Following are a few facts on Giant Alaskan Malamute dogs.

Information on Giant Alaskan Malamute breeds

  • The average life span of a Giant Alaskan Malamute is between 10 and 12 years.
  • The average weekly maintenance cost for a Giant Alaskan Malamute pet is around $35.
  • Adult Giant Alaskan Malamutes can weigh up to 40 kg.
  • The height (at shoulder) of an adult Giant Alaskan Malamute is usually around 24 inches for a male and 22 inches for a female.

Origin

The Giant Alaskan Malamute has been named after the Eskimo tribe known as the Mahlemuts. These dogs are used to draw sledges in the snowy Alaskan landscape.

Positive traits of Giant Alaskan Malamute breed

The Giant Alaskan Malamute breed is generally friendly and social by nature and loves to be petted and cuddled and stroked by people. It is fiercely loyal to its master, being one of the most faithful of the different doggie breeds. Those who are new to this particular breed need to know that Giant Alaskan Malamute dogs move around in packs. In short these are pack dominant dogs and their ideal mode of training is through positive reinforcement training methods such as through treats and praise.

Drawbacks of Giant Alaskan Malamute breed

This breed may not always be friendly with other dogs. Giant Alaskan Malamutes are working dogs by nature and require at least a couple of hours of exercise or work daily to keep up their spirits.

Color of Giant Alaskan malamute breed

In most cases, Giant Alaskan Malamutes have a light grey to blackish coat, interspersed with white. The white coat is usually on the chest and face and on the underside of the belly.

Grooming

As you may have guessed by now, this dog requires heavy duty grooming to keep knotty matted coat and skin dermatitis at bay and to minimize hair shedding. Besides, regular grooming will keep your doggie happy and promote a deep bond between your pet and you.

How to recognize a Giant Alaskan Malamute?

These dogs are very easy to recognize owing to their similarity with German shepherd dogs. The looks, height, build; face and tail are uncannily similar, only the coat is made up of black/light grey and white. This breed is pretty common in England. It has a rather kind face marked by a gentle, impish and naughty look, especially in case of pups. Dog lovers are generally bowled over by its cuddly and cutie pie appeal, despite its huge size.
