Get familiar with Rabbit Breeds – a complete guide

Through the process of natural selection or selective breeding various kinds of rabbit breeds are created for pet owners. ARBA or American Rabbit Breeders’ Association recognize 50 varieties of rabbit breeds which are often judged and exhibited in rabbit shows. There are different breed standards for the different kinds of rabbit breeds which are emulated by breeders in order to enable the prize pedigree rabbits to qualify for a show.

In this article I will list a complete breed of both the rabbit breeds mentioned in Raising Better Rabbits and Cavies as well as some foreign or commercial breeds.

Angora rabbit

It is a kind of domestic rabbit cultivated and bred for its wool that is removed through plucking or shearing and this rabbit belongs to a very old type that originated in Turkey in Ankara. Satin, English, giant and French angora rabbits are the 4 recognized breeds.

American fuzzy lop

They weigh less than 4 lb and their recognized varieties are solid and broken. It is a rather new breed.

Argente

France is the country of their origins and they are of 4 varieties:

Crème D’Argent

It weighs around 8 to 11 lb. Its meat is very tasty and it is bred mainly for rabbit shows, being a prize rabbit.

Belgian silver

This one weighs around 8 to 9 lb.

Champagne D’Argent

It weighs around 12 to 9 lb. The species is over 400 years old and is famed for its silvery coat. It is and was a very common breed in Champagneprovince of France.

Beveren

It is available in colors like white, blue and black and weighs approximately 8 to 12 pounds. It is one of the largest of the furry breeds and was bred in Belgium in the small town of Beveren close to Antwerp.

Blue of Sint Niklaas

The internationally accepted color of this particular breed is blue and it weighs 10 to 12 lb. It is a rare bred now and originated in Flanders.

Blue of hem

It is another of the unique and rare dark blue colored furry rabbits of Belgium that originated from the village of Wallonia.

Blanc de Bouscat

It is usually available in white and originated in France.

Blanc de Hotot

This one also originated in France and its development can be credited to Eugenie Bernhard. It belongs to the larger variety of rabbits. This is a rare breed.
