Rabbit breeds or types of rabbits are usually created through the processes of natural selection and selective breeding. Belonging to the family of Leporidae, rabbits are small furry mammals that look oh-so-cute and are in high demand among pet lovers all over the world for their cuddle quotient. Bob tails and long pink ears and whiskers add to their cute appeal. Rabbits are found all over the globe, but the rarer and more stunning breeds used to abound in provincial Belgium, Netherlands and France.
There are 5 different genres or types of rabbits –
This is a favorite among pet lovers. An adult silver rabbit can weigh between 1.8 kg and 3 kg. Their silver accented coat has an even length and the fur length is short. You can get silver rabbits in several colors but the common feature of all will be silver highlights.
Angora
Lop
These are called lop rabbits because they are distinguished by their lop ears which are soft, long and drooping over the sides of the head. Some of these lop rabbits have ears which are as big as their bodies and the lop ears look enormous. Some of the larger breeds have long drooping lop ears measuring over 50 cm.
The English lop rabbit possesses the longest ears among all the rabbit breeds and the shape of the ear is lean and mean. But the rabbit itself is rather small in size. Lop rabbits make for excellent pets and they are available in a multitude of colors and their bodies are marked in various ways.
Belgian hare
It has a reddish tan colored silky lush coat and happens to be extremely intelligent. Its weight varies between 2.7 kg and 4.5 kg. It resembles a hare in appearance.
Netherlands dwarf
Dwarf rabbits are the usual names by which these are called and they are loved by pet owners as a type. Their head resembles an apple with short ears sticking out of it. The body is compact and the fur can be of different and visually arresting colors. Their disposition is even.
